Palungtar Airport, located in Palungtar Municipality of Gorkha, was operational since October 1960 AD (2017 BS) as a major gateway connecting historical and tourist areas. This airport had a 1,067-meter-long grass/earth runway, which was at an altitude of 1,467 feet (447 meters). However, with the development of the Prithvi Highway, the importance of this airport decreased, and the airport has been closed since 2035 BS, due to which there is no active airport in Gorkha district.
The work of upgrading and operating the currently closed Palungtar Airport has not been able to move forward. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, which allocated 31.75 million rupees in 2077 BS for the airport upgrade, has not been able to do much work so far.
Although the amount was allocated under the airport runway upgrade program, vehicles have now started plying on the airport runway. The surrounding areas have become pastures.
Although a contract agreement has been signed with Kasthamandap Construction Pvt. Ltd. for the airport upgrade, the work has not been carried out effectively. The airport, spread over an area of ​​about 185 ropanis, had been hosting flights and landings until 2035 BS.
